James D. Dougherty
(July 30, 1968 - March 14, 2010)

Fundraiser for the Exeter-West Greenwich & Edgewood Eagles Youth Football Teams in Honor of Sergeant James D. Dougherty

SERGEANT JAMES D. DOUGHERTY:  "ALWAYS PLAY LIKE A CHAMPION"

Ms. Brenda Celona, a friend of the Dougherty family, is organizing a fundraiser for the Exeter-West Greenwich and the Edgewood Eagles youth football teams in honor of the late Sergeant James D. Dougherty who devoted his time and efforts, not for grandiosity, but because he was eager to serve as a coach and mentor to the young players.  Sergeant Dougherty's genuine concern for the children, his personality and coaching style served as a reminder of how people can have a positive impact on others.  Sergeant Dougherty truly cared for the children with whom he was entrusted and meticulously prepared for each practice and game and instilled confidence and hope in the hearts of the players.  Corporal Diane M. Dougherty was touched by the words expressed in a letter from  one of his  players, that read "Coach Jim always told us to work hard in sports, in class and in life.  I will take this advice and make him proud by working hard at everything I do."

Sergeant Dougherty's commitment and influence on these organizations is a positive reflection on the Rhode Island State Police.  Sergeant Dougherty's professional and personal life mirrored the Division Creed, "You are always to remember that you are in the Division of State Police and in the Service of the State.  It is a call of honor.  It requires unselfish devotion to duty, the highest type of honesty, and downright courage."

A visor, similar to the one frequently worn by Sergeant James Dougherty, which can be purchased for $15.00, the proceeds of which will go to support youth football programs.  The visor is navy blue and bears a gold shamrock (Notre Dame colors) outlined in white inscribed with the number 33.
